Project Details
I first began working at the Student Village in a publications capacity in 1994, when, under their bursary program, I was assigned the project of completing the 1994 edition of the campus yearbook, Memoravillia.
In 1995, I volunteered to take on the reigns of writing and editing the campus newsletter/gossip rag, The Village Voice. Throughout the course of the year, I published The Voice on a monthly basis, and was again asked to complete the 1995 edition of Memoravillia as part of their bursary program.
In 1996, I was elected into an honorary position, whereby I was required to increase publication of the Village Voice to fortnightly releases, as well as produce Memoravillia at the end of the year. In 1997, I added the Student Village website to my duties, and over time I began including the Village Voice as part of the site in PDF format, and the regular addition of photographs from social and sporting events kept the site reasonably dynamic.
I also secured sponsorship for the publication from Hoyts (an Australian cinema chain), Penguin Publishing, and Warner Music Australia, who supplied products for review, which helped to generate the content required for the demanding publication schedule of the Village Voice.
As each year progressed, I took the steps necessary to gradually increase the quality of the publications for which I was responsible. In 1996, I was able to print 30% of the Memoravillia in colour, and by 1997, I had taken it to a full colour glossy magazine.
Once this conversion to full colour took place, and I obtained a copy of Photoshop, I was able to implement an idea I'd had some years earlier, when I'd observed that many residents would stick photos to the walls of their rooms as the year progressed. I then produced a giant wall poster of collaged images, which was separate from the book, that residents could put up on their walls as a reminder of their year.
In 1998, I resigned from my role as Publications officer, however returned to complete the 1998 edition after my replacement abandoned the project before completion.
