Las Brisas
My visit to Peru has been much shorter than I'd have liked. In the epic journey I’ve planned for so long, I was going to spend four times as long here, and I actually considered transplanting myself to Peru for a year or two. Edgard’s family had a treat planned for me in what was effectively my last real experience here as a tourist, and it has perhaps lingered with me longer than many of the others I have accumulated.

The last leg
We had most of the day to take a last look around Arequipa. Since we left Lima a couple of weeks ago it was the first opportunity we’ve had to really stop and take in our surroundings. We’d already visited the must see destinations of the city, yet felt that so far we’d still only got a taste of the place. I’ve already resolved to return here again for further exploration, as well as a visit to the summit of El Misti.

Two Worlds
Today I visited Pachacámac, a vast archaeological site to the South of Lima. From what I could gather from the guide, the site has been occupied by several cultures including the Wari, Ishmay and Lima, who preceded the Inca. At various locations as I looked at the ruins of these ancient and relatively sophisticated civilisations, the view of the shantytowns on Lima's outskirts was inescapable, and I found myself contemplating the similar fates imposed on the original inhabitants of the world's continents by European settlement.

Mobility, Peruvian style
So the final leg of my flight into Peru actually redeemed LAN, with a better-fitted plane, better food, better service. Perhaps the length of the flight had something to do with it. It's taken me a few days to deal with the jet lag, though I'm still not completely past it. The odd thing is, I've wanted to sleep at times that don't make sense for here or back home. My jet lag is playing havoc with my senses, and colouring my perception of the city.
