To the last place on earth

0Warrnambool, Australia

11th March 2005

The moving company arrived at 10am, and began loading my belongings onto their truck. Like many removalists I’ve encountered over the years, they had a grumble about the way I’d packed my things, and as I watched the truck disappear down the street I wondered if I’d paid enough money to get my things to Canberra, let alone safely.

The Big Move

My parents, and to my surprise, my brother and his girlfriend, arrived to collect the last of my belongings to take back to Warrnambool where they’ll be kept in storage until I go back to Victoria. Kate—my sister—had been asking me to come back to Warrnambool before leaving for Canberra so I could see her child, but by the time my things were packed, there was still no word, other than that she was in labour.

So, I went back to Warrnambool with my parents, in the hope my sister would have given birth before I had to catch the train back to Melbourne the following morning. She was still in labour when we arrived in Warrnambool three hours later, and eventually the hospital told us we should go to bed, as it wasn’t likely there would be news that night.
