On the move again
Tomorrow I’m going offline for a few weeks. One of my new housemates is bringing his broadband connection to the new house with him, however he won’t move in for another week, which will ultimately mean I have no internet in the interim. I’ve decided to finally take the necessary steps to cure my MacBook Pro of being one of the most unreliable products on the market, and send it in for repairs.
Despite countless complaints to Apple Australia about how much it was costing me in downtime, they won’t even consider replacing the machine with a new one unless there’s a diagnostic report to justify this. So I have decided to use the week without internet, and place the laptop in a two-week waiting list, and hope that it comes back either fixed, or with enough wrong to finally convince Apple Customer Relations (an oxymoron if ever there was one) that the machine needs to be replaced.
I’ll be using my time to finish tasks at work before I move over to a new role in the accessibility arena, and to occasionally sneak some time to bug-fix on my new site (though it seems most of it is already fixed). First and foremost though, I expect to be unpacking my stuff again. The new place will be without a tv and internet for the first week, and I’ll be without this laptop for at least a couple of weeks. I can see myself getting cabin fever after a while, but I may just finish reading some books I’ve had on the go for a year or so.
I still have about 70% of the images I shot at istockalypse to upload to istockphoto, let alone the rest of the catalogue from Spain, and that’s going to require a lot of hours in front of the screen (once it’s back, and stable). I’ve also got a bunch of content to publish to my test site to ensure everything is working. But that will all be waiting for me after I get the laptop back.
I collected the keys for my new place tonight, and did a quick re-check of the room I’m going into. I’m surprised by how much the room resembles the old one I had in Campbell, just the house is in better condition and has central gas heating. The removalists are coming at 10:30am to pick up my stuff, and all things going well, I’ll be set down by midday, which will give me plenty of time to get my laptop across to the Apple Service Centre.
I know one thing is certain. I am tired of being on the move. I’m yearning to be able to settle somewhere for a while.
